The action centers on daughter Patsy and Alfred, the new man she brings home to introduce to her parents and brother. It's a world where the sound of gunshots is de rigueur, heavy breathers regularly call, unseen visitors knock at the door….. and the Newquists are just trying to have a nice day. Madam's Organ Bar

A taste of Texas in the nation's capital, a bit of Dixie in the District, The Human Country Jukebox plays the best classic country and western songs by the likes of Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and more. If these songs don't get your hands clapping and your feet stomping you should probably see a doctor. And don't say, "I don't like country music." If you like great singing, expert playing, soulful, bluesy, "I'm so sad I could drink, so happy I could drink some more" music then you'll enjoy The Human Country Jukebox.

Based in Adams Morgan, The Human Country Jukebox is made up members from all across these United States. A rag-tag group who met through open-mic nights around D.C., The Human Country Jukebox consists of Jack "Big Texas" Gregori on lead vocals and guitar, Jackie "The Intimidator" Zubrzycki on vocals and keys, Saw-Dust Charlie on harp, Ken "Porkchop" Cobb on bass and vocals, and "El Guapo" Jacob Patterson-Stein on drums. After gigging along 18th Street, the group was invited to perform on the second floor of Madam's Organ, where they now play every Tuesday night.

"Islam Through Western Eyes: From the Crusades to the War on Terrorism"

Other

Wednesday, February 8 @ 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm
Georgetown University

invites you to a book event:"Islam Through Western Eyes: From the Crusades to the War on Terrorism"________________________ featuring author:Jonathan Lyons________________________Book Description:Despite the West's growing involvement in Muslim societies, conflicts, and cultures, its inability to understand or analyze the Islamic world threatens any prospect for East-West rapprochement. Impelled by 1,000 years of anti-Muslim ideas and images, the West has failed to engage in any meaningful or productive way with the world of Islam. Formulated in the medieval halls of the Roman Curia and courts of the European Crusaders and perfected in the cable TV newsrooms, this anti-Islamic discourse determines what can and cannot be said about Muslims and their religion, trapping the West in a dangerous, dead-end politics that it cannot afford.

In Islam Through Western Eyes, Jonathan Lyons unpacks Western habits of thinking and writing about Islam, conducting a careful analysis of the West's grand totalizing narrative across one thousand years of history. He observes the discourse's corrosive effects on the social sciences, including sociology, politics, philosophy, theology, international relations, security studies, and human rights scholarship. He follows its influence on research, speeches, political strategy, and government policy, preventing the West from responding effectively to its most significant twenty-first-century challenges: the rise of Islamic power, the emergence of religious violence, and the growing tension between established social values and multicultural rights among Muslim immigrant populations. Through the intellectual "archaeology" of Michel Foucault, Lyons reveals the workings of this discourse and its underlying impact on our social, intellectual, and political lives. He then addresses issues of deep concern to Western readers-Islam and modernity, Islam and violence, and Islam and women-and proposes new ways of thinking about the Western relationship to the Islamic world.________________________ Wednesday, February 8, 201212:30pm - ICC 270 ________________________Jonathan Lyons spent twenty years as a foreign correspondent and editor for Reuters, much of it in the Islamic world. His research focuses on the shifting boundaries between East and West, and his publications include The House of Wisdom: How the Arabs Transformed Western Civilization and (with Geneive Abdo) Answering Only to God: Faith and Freedom in Twenty-first-Century Iran. He has a doctorate in sociology and lives in Washington, D.C. ________________________Seating is limited. For directions to the Center and information on parking, please visit: http://acmcu.georgetown.edu/about/contact/

QVerity Course - Detection of Deception/Critical Interviewing - Feb 9, 2012

Learning & Education, Other

Thursday, February 9 @ 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Hemsley Fraser Center

Uncover deception in this intelligence-based, interactive course designed to significantly enhance objective detection of deception skills. Before QVerity training, most individuals erroneously rely on instinct or hunches to assess truth and deception. Building upon the skills developed as part of Detection of Deception, the interview now becomes a dynamic response evaluation and exploration process rather than the dreaded “checklist mentality” approach typical of many failed interviews.
